Rules of Survival

In the brutal, bleak, uncompromising world of Follow The Crows, those who survive are often not the strongest or the most confident, but are in fact the sneakiest, most cutthroat and selfish among us. Survival is not something to be taken lightly, one cannot simply wander the wilderness of this post-apocalyptic world and expect to be okay.

Some survivors stick to a rigid list of rules to ensure their own survival, meaning that they will always be prepared for any possible outcome. Here is that list:
  1. Trust no-one.
Everyone here is a potential enemy, and the threat to your own survival is far too dangerous to ignore. It doesn't matter if you've been with someone with five years or five minutes, no-one is trustworthy and everyone is out for themselves. They've made it this far, never underestimate how they might have done that. It's a brutal world.

  2. Don't do any more than the basic tasks of:
Eat, Sleep, Scavenge and Trade (and only if it is absolutely necessary).

You'll just waste energy wasting time. There's no place for recreation here, just what you need to do to survive. Don't eat your food unless you need to to ward off starvation, you never know when or where your next meal is going to come from. Sleeping leaves you vulnerable, only do it to make sure you're not exhausted, and even then, only if you can find a safe place to do so. Never leave yourself open to attack. Any chance you get take what you can, so long as it's safe. Food, weapons, clothes, there's no shame in Scavenging for your own survival. If you need something someone has, try to trade, but never underestimate the value of Rule 1. People might not want to trade, don't push them. You don't know what they're capable of.

  3. Don't carry anything with you that doesn't support the tasks outlined in Rule 2.
Items of value? They're not photographs, books, games or the like, they're things that are going to ensure your survival. If you don't need it, chuck. It's extra weight and extra time that may prove to be invaluable in your navigation of this world. Also, always be ready to leave at a moments notice, don't unpack when you stop to rest, you don't know what's lurking around the corner.

  4. When traveling from A to B, avoid the black roads (tarmac).
They may be the shortest route, but they're also the most dangerous. They often leave you open for an attack or ambush. You don't want to be anywhere you can't see something coming up on you, the black roads have cover, trees, bushes and the like. This is not a good thing. You need to know your surroundings. It's better to be in the open.

  5. Build a mental map of any routes you travel, do not write anything down.
For one, you don't want to loose your map and find yourself lost. This could lead to certain death, you might stumble upon an threat. Worse still, you don't want a threat finding your map and ambushing you on your well worn routes.

  6. Hide secret caches of material on any route you travel more than once.
This is for security as well as survival. Should something happen, should you loose your supplies or find yourself in trouble, you'll never be too far from help. Make sure the materials support the tasks laid out in Rule 2, never forget that this is about your own survival.

  7. Avoid the towns and cities.
They're a breeding ground for dangerous people and vicious gangs. It may seem like the safest place, supplies, food, shelter, but they're actually the least safe place you could be. Countless numbers have made this mistake. There are plenty of places for dangerous people to hide. If you think you might be coming close to one, turn the other way, these psychopaths don't mind venturing out a little to find their next conquest. This rule also applies to any large population (four people or more) that you may encounter in your quest for survival. Remember, nowhere is safe.

  8. Trust no-one.
Rule 1 is the most important rule of all. Never forget it. Never loose sight of what this is about. Your survival. Nothing else matters.
These eight rules do not guarantee your existence in the world of Follow The Crows, but sticking rigidly to them will certainly improve your chances of survival. Remember, it's a bleak, uncompromising and often violent world out there. Be sure to be very careful.

When you have nothing, something is everything.
